McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors group recently completed this master bedroom for a very busy professional couple.  Buttery soft colors fabricated into casement and sheer drapery treatments were our starting inspiration for this large Master Suite.  Luxurious fabrics upholstered on an oversized tufted custom headboard with a matching pair of chaise lounges highlighted with coordinating pillows, comforter, and coverlet sets the stage for a smoothing retreat from a busy day.

Kitchen After Refinishing & New Backsplash

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group enjoy sharing our latest decorating accomplishments in our interior design blog; creating beautiful homes. We recently finished renovating a kitchen as part of a larger project for a 5,000 square foot 10 year old home.  After modifying the existing cabinets (removing two lower appliance cabinets) we opted to refresh the kitchen cabinets with an updated painted finish and darker trim contrast detail.  The backsplash was replaced to create texture and contrast against the soft cabinet finishes.  This brightened the room, added interest and coordinates with the color palette used in the adjoining family room of this water-front home.

Kitchen Before

New electrical was added under the span of upper cabinets using recessed electrical receptacles strips and under cabinet lighting.  The benefit to our client is the multiple locations to plug in their kitchen appliances and fabulous task and nightly accent lighting.  The area under the upper cabinets appears wider because we opted to extend the  design of the backsplash with multiple textures and shapes of tile details.  Due to the complexity of this particular tile design we drew  the design to scale (see drawing below) to communicate our “design intent” and place the location of each of the tiles and contrasting “jewels” inserts per our vision.   Our expert tile installers carefully laid out the pattern and approved it with our design team prior to starting installation.  The results tell the rest…  One more beautiful detail from McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group.

About the Author:  Marilyn McGaw is the principal designer and owner of McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group located in Palm Beach, FL.  Her design specialty is award winning ”high rise, designer ready” luxury condominiums for multi-home clientele.

Sometimes I am asked, “What is the common dominator for the fabulous design projects we complete at McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group and how can the client/designer collaborations we have enjoyed over the past 20 years helped or hurt the design process?  To answer that question I developed 6 quick “rules”:

Rule 1: Clients that listen and communicate their needs clearly have the best outcomes.  Planning and preparation is the basis to creating a solution to meet your needs.  Work with your designer to add all the items on your wish list.  Complete the design pan before moving on to ordering. This is the only way to insure your vision will be realized.

Rule 2:  Don’t change design direction after ordering. Occasionally we work with a client that wants to make changes after product is ordered and before it is installed.  It is almost always a mistake to change course after the majority of items have been selected for a room.  Resist the urge to go in a “new” direction.  You may love the fabric you found or the photo you discovered but it may just not work in your room.  Trying to “tweak” the plan later is complicated and may not be possible.

Rule 3:  Changes will impact the other elements in the room.  We like to use the “pebble in the pond” analogy.  Change one component of the design and it may impact the rest of the room negatively.  One of our goals as decorating professionals is to look at the “big picture”.

Rule 4:  Don’t go rogue.  Designer secret; sometimes our clients want to go rogue, stop listening or think they know better.  The pillows that were perfect just last week in the guest room are not the right color or texture for the new comforter the client purchased without consulting with the designer.  Not only is it frustrating to your designer but the final outcome is usually more expensive and will impact negatively impact the design.

Rule 5:  All parts impact a cohesive whole.  All the ingredients create a building block of design and in the end harmony is created by the tension and relationship of one element to another.

Rule 6:  Trust your design team.  A talented and capable designer knows what a room will look like before it is finished.  Trust their vision and input.  Our shared vision for your home is our goal at McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group.  We’ve enjoyed 20 plus years of implementing successful project design for an affluent clientele.

Add views to your Dining Room with Moulding & Mirrors.

So you are in the market to purchase a new dining room table?  How do you determine the correct size of dining table for your home?

 Quick Reference Guidelines:

Rectangular Table

30″ Deep  x 60″ Long         Seats  4 to 6 Dinner Guests          9’0″ x 12′ 0″

36″ Deep x 78″ Long           Seats 6 to 8 Dinner Guests           10’0″ x 13’6″

42″ Deep x 96″ Long            Seats 8 to 10 Dinner Guests        10’6″ x 15’0″

Round Table

42″ Round                                4 to 5 Dinner Guests                      10’6″ x 10’6″

48″ Round                                 5 to 6 Dinner Guests                      11’6″ x 11’6″

60″ Round                                 7 to 8 Dinner Guests                      13’0″ x 13’0″

Add architectural detailing with soffits, crown moldings and lighting to a otherwise plain room to add visual interest to your space.  Wallcoverings, paint and or mirror is wonderful to give your dining room that “special feeling”.  Keep the detailing in the same theme to create a cohesive feel to your space.  And before you make your final color decisions, consider how your new design plans tie into connecting rooms in your home.

Other Helpful information:

  • Each person requires about 24″ of width so they can comfortably eat and avoid bumping elbows.
  • Allow 32″ between the table and wall to allow people to get up and sit down easily.
  • Allow 38″ if people are also going to be walking back and forth behind the table.
  • Allow 42″ if you are going to serve people from behind their chairs.
  • If you have a china cabinet or buffet table, take your measurement from there, not the wall.
  • Round Tables with center leafs become ovals when fully extended.

Use a clean interior broom to lift and smooth your carpet after vacuuming to remove foot prints.  Also an excellent way to remove loose pet hair before your guests arrive or between vacuuming.

Quick paint color selection method:  Choose one main color (use 100% color formula); 50% for ceiling and 25% formula for trim. Be sure to do a sample “brush out” to test the color before making your final color selection and applying paint to surfaces.

On a windy day, use the wind to do some of your household chores.  Put your artificial or live plants outside and let the wind blow off any accumulated dust.  Be sure to keep them anchored so they don’t blow over.  At the end of the day your plants will be nice and clean.

Florida is just starting the nicest part of the year, our fabulous early winter and spring weather.  Dressing the outside of our homes is as important as our interiors.  Several years ago I put together an South Florida easy reference landscape planner for our Home Owners Association. Today I am sharing my twelve page planner with our readers.

Calendula

The planner includes quick reference pictures of flowering plants; the best times to plant broken down by month during their prime season; the best time to remove and/or replace at the end of their growing cycle.

It may take a moment to open the 12 page planning guide but I promise for the flower enthusiasts it is worth the wait.

Click to expand Planting Guide PDF:  South Florida Flowering Guide .

How to use the guide:

The best months to plant and enjoy are highlighted in blue.  None planting times are shown as white.  Some plants have specific removal months. Otherwise change your planting beds when they start to look haggard.

Please feel free to print out the pages of the plants you are considering planting and take them with you to the nursery or home improvement store when you shop.  Share the guide with your friends or link to this page to reference as needed.

Art Deco accents are apparent when entering our latest renovation in Palm Beach, Florida.  Metallic silver and beige grass cloth wallcovering set the stage for a custom 1920 Parisian inspired chandelier and sconces.  This space was designed to highlight our client’s original art deco artwork and accessories.  The soffits in the grand salon was redesigned to create visually appealing general and accent lighting for entertaining at night… carefull placement of ceiling cans and art lights continue the lighting theme.

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interior Group clients are often surprised when it comes to the cost of painting.  I wanted to share with our readers as well as our clients the in’s and out’s of selecting a painting contractor.

When selecting a painter consider your budget perimeters; based on satisfactory work and the level of home you are updating.  We normally request two bids on behalf of our clients from previous companies we have worked enjoyed working with and experienced an excellent outcome.  Normally one bid will be higher but both bids should be really fairly close in price or you have to question the level of service included in their bid also called a “scope of work”.  Once we have narrowed down our preferred contractor, we also visited several of the contractors’ recent jobs to confirm the quality of work and client’s experience working with the painter.

Paint color schemes unify your Home!

The last and most critical consideration you require from your painting contractor is to receive written liability insurance, workman’s compensation, and contractor licensing. (Note:  Not all states require painters to be licensed; please check your specific state for requirements.  Additionally, your county may also have licensing requirements.)  If you choose to hire a contractor without liability or workman’s compensation you may take on the contractor’s responsibility should a worker be injured or if damage occurs it will be under your status as a homeowner. (Again, check your particular state laws for specific information.)

A good paint job will not be inexpensive.  The man hours required to do an excellent paint job is extensive.  The size of the rooms to be painted, total square footage and ceiling height will be calculated into the final price.  For example; a larger home with a number of rooms to be painted with 16 foot ceilings will require more labor and materials therefore more an expensive painting project.

This is how to the breakdown the cost of painting:

1/3 of the job of painting is in the preparation and cleanup at the end of the day.  Prep includes protecting the surrounding area, covering the air conditioning ducks, caulking all the seams, filling in holes, dents, cracks, sanding any remaining rough areas.

1/3 of the paint job is the level of paint which makes a huge difference.  Paint manufacturers offer everything from builder grade which some painters cut with water to get it to go through their spray guns to highly pigmented paint which is a lot more expensive than builder grade and is easy clean with soap and water.  We recommend to our clients a higher grade of paint to get the best quality finish within the level of service we are providing.

1/3 of the paint job is in the application.  A premium paint job for doors and trim includes priming and sanding between coats to get the best finish possible otherwise you can experience orange peel and/or brush marks on the wood which is less than satisfactory.  Walls and ceilings should received two coats of paint, be smooth, without lap marks or “holidays”. New surfaces or those with existing dark finishes may need a coat of primer prior to painting to get the true paint color.  Don’t be surprised if painting new surfaces cost more since the labor and material requirements will be higher.

A few examples of lack of preparation:

Improper preparation which including primer and preparing a surface including preparing wood properly can create an area that is unstable.  Refinishing a built-in or trim not properly sanded, cleaned, caulked, and primed prior to painting can create a finish that will lift and not holding up under use.  To fix the problem the surface will require the surface be stripped, and/or sanded down and repainted which would be more expensive to do than if the finish had been applied correctly in the first place.

The wall surfaces should not have runs, cracks, imperfections, or lap marks.  Also check your walls level of perfection or imperfection to determine if you would like to do more repairs prior to hiring a paint contractor.  Sometimes we recommend to our clients a complete skim coat to smooth out the majority of imperfections to get our best paint job.

Sheetrock preparation comes in several levels; the highest being Level 5 which has no imperfections.  Level 4 has a few imperfections.  Level 3 more imperfections, etc.  We normally recommend a level 4 or 5.

If you see a low ball bid the question to ask yourself “what is not included in their scope of work?” or are they cutting corners.

New paint colors and finishes can transform your home; brighten, freshen, refresh, and give you a new outlook.

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group loves to add art lighting to our projects.  Instead of only using ceiling or table lamps add art lighting to your picture frames to make your room look special.  Have your local electrician hard-wire them to wall receptacles directly behind your art and add dimmers to give your home that custom look.

Unsure how large the art lights should be?

Use the quick measuring guide below:

Measure the width of your art and use the following rules to determine the length of your picture light.

  • For a frame 8 to 14 inches wide, use a 4 1/2 inch light.
  • For a frame 12 to 18 inches wide, use a 5 1/2 inch light.
  • For a frame 16 to 24 inches wide, use a 7 to 9 inch light.
  • For a frame 25 to 37 inches wide, use a 14 1/2 to 16 inch light.
  • For a frame more than 35 inches wide, find a 30 inch light.

Glass

When lighting your art consider what type of glass would work best for your application.  Framing with non-reflective glass although more expensive option helps eliminate glare from inside or outside light sources.  Use 30 degree angle ceiling lighting or find a art light that is adjustable.  Subtract 5 degrees from the position to accent the texture of a painting.

Light Intensity

Consider the intensity of the light you will be using to highlight your art.  The general rule for accenting a piece of art is to light it three times brighter than the rest of the room.  Dimmers will make the most of your art lighting scheme.

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group love to give tips as we work with our clients on their homes.  Here are five quick tips we are sharing to help make your design renovation a wonderful success.

Tip One:  Complete your design plan prior to purchasing.

Complete your design plan before purchasing

Think you found the perfect fabric or carpet, wait before you purchase until you have all the other main design elements selected.  Request a carpet sample or keep a picture of the elements of the room you are considering.  Group those items together for quick review.  Confirm the design details work together (including from room to room as in “flow”) and your plan has no “conflicts”.  Once you have the big ticket items selected and all the color and styles elements work then is the time for purchasing, not before.

Tip Two:  Don’t be afraid to do the project in Phases.Love the design of the window treatments for your home but the price is not working for your budget?  It is possible to break down purchasing into steps.  For example:  Window shades, traversing sheers, cornice boards and drapery side panels are beautiful when used together but the cost can really add up.  Need to do two adjoining rooms consider purchasing all the traversing sheer fabric at the same time but have only one room fabricated.  The color dye lots will be the same and you may receive an extra discount because of the yardage you are purchasing.  When your budget is less strained have the second room fabricated.

Design Details are Critical when planning Phases of Installation

Or once the window design is completed, purchase the shades and/or traversing sheers first.  Phase two purchase the drapery side panel and cornice board.  This will help break up the cost and still look beautiful when installed.

Tip Three:  Don’t rush the process.

Beautiful home design takes time, patience and careful planning.  Good home design is layering of different elements that all must work together to create your dream home.  The home improvement media (magazines and television) depict instant design.  Rarely does design happen in a “moment”.    For example, it may well take 8 to 10 weeks to order the kitchen cabinets you love after careful and thoughtful space planning.  Installing your kitchen will be a fraction of that time.  Don’t rush the process it will only create stress when you are renovating.

Tip Four:  Enjoy the renovations.

Prepare your family for the stresses of home renovations.  Simple changes can be stressful in our busy lives and yes there will be clutter and upheaval during the process.  Don’t be too hard on yourself because even good events in our lives can be stressful.  After the renovations are complete allow a few days to become accustom to the changes.

Accessorizing adds warm and appeal to your rooms.

Smaller renovations can be great for removing clutter from your closets, doing a bit of spring cleaning and re-organizing your home.  If you must repaint the entire inside of your home, take it in steps.  Finish the living rooms first, put everything back, add your new touches and start the next room.  Stay on plan and finish what you started before moving on to the next room.

Tip Five:  Accessorize with art, area rugs, lighting, plants and table top accessories.

Design is not finished until it is accessorized.  Many stop short of fabulous design because they fail to understand the importance of accessorizing.  That model home look is achieved by careful budgeting and consideration to accessories.  Home accessorizing is not an easy feat to pull off unless the same careful consideration is given to the finishing touches of your home.  Failure to accessorize will have the effect of a less warm and inviting room.

We hope you enjoy our quick tips for a happy and successful design outcome!

As owner and principal of McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group I educate our clients as to why we are selecting or directing our projects in a certain manner.  Cohesive design is virtual to the happily successful outcomes for our client’s homes.

Design principals can be confusing to the layperson.  In the simplest terms, think of design like a song writer creating a melody for a song.  The art of arranging using pitch, duration, rhythm and the tone of musical notes create the desired effect of the sound writer.

Inteior Design is Like a Melody!

A lyric expresses mood, lightness, feelings, drama or calm.  Repetition creates expectation of what is to come next. Harmony is a string of notes sung or played together providing momentum and richness to the melody.

The same principals can be said for great interior design.  Each element of our selections  (function, style, colors, finishes, lifestyle, architectural details, furniture, art and accessories) work together to create harmony to our surroundings and a level of expectation as we move from one room to another.   Careful selections make our homes feel complete as we add design detail upon design detail.

Evaluate spaces you love.  See what harmony has been created and inspired by the song writer of your favorite interior design melody.

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group is currently updating a home in Wellington, Florida.  Our client has beautiful furniture they have collected over the years and when they downsized to a smaller home they used their existing home furnishings in their new home. Now, 6 years later it is time for a update.  As we move through the design process I am reminder how essential interior design planning and budgeting is to the final outcome of the project.

Paint color schemes unify your Home!

We are starting with new paint, carpet and drapery treatments.  This will make a huge difference and update the home immeasurably.  This gives us the opportunity to unify the color scheme and correct design deficiencies.  We are replace the worn items or outdated items which are not working with our design vision.

One limitation in our planning process is working with furniture and art from a previous home which has details which must be incorporated into our existing plan.  A short trip to our fabric library and a slightly longer trip to the local design center reaped thousand of fabrics in which to select for our update.  While many fabrics are available only a few make the cut.  Limited by our color palette each new (or replacement fabric) is critical to the blend of colors.  My goal is to make the home look as if it was just completed which is no easy feat.

A fresh look at the functionality by way of space planning of each room we are addressing gives us new inspiration.  Some furniture is in need of refurbishment or, sadly, disposal or replacement.  Re-upholstery or refinishing is a answer in some cases, other times we must “bite the bullet” and find a new home (somewhere else) for our beloved pieces.  Budget makes

Measure, Design and Crunch the Budget Before Purchasing!

the selection process easier of what items stays or what goes when it is less expensive to replace than refurbish.  Always consider quality, style, location and functionality during the decision making process.  Sometimes we must use our heads not our hearts when it comes to the final choices.  Never a easy process but budget usually prevails.

Consider the architectural features of your home when planning new design details.  In this instance our client’s home has an abundance of arches throughout.  In our case, west facing windows are great for light but also create problems with sun control to protect furniture and carpet from sun damage.  Additionally, the slider windows are over-sized at 124″ high by 94″ wide.  Shade and drapery options are limited as many shades are not available over 120″ h and sheer fabrics which are available in  118″ to 130″ fabrics cannot be “railroaded”. Fabrics can be turned the opposite direction but depending on pattern and how the material is weaved may not hang properly when pleated.

Same window different designs allows for exploration of functionality, budget and style.

In the end planning is key to successful design.  All it takes is a little time and some “due diligence” for the very best outcomes!

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group have been working on various projects including a 1980′s remodel in Delray Beach, FL.  which has kept us quite busy.  This project is a 3,500 square foot home located on the golf course as every room is being renovated.

As always, I want to share my design inspirations with my readers.  A current and on-going design trend is adding metallic touches to add texture, depth and sparkle to our homes. While metallics have been a hot trend for some time we continue to see our kitchens can also share in the use of metallics.  Crackle glass also is a hot trend and though expensive per square foot as compared to other surfaces can be back lit with LED lights that change color which is quite dramatic.

Crackled Glass Counter Tops

Add stainless interior door hardware, brushed nickel bathroom fixtures, cabinet hardware and your metallic color scheme is off to a great start.

When considering purchasing higher end items for your home, my budget saving tip is to use the expensive items in the most important areas of your home such as your public spaces (living room, family room, entry, kitchen, master bedroom – baths, and balance the cost with lower priced but still “design savvy” materials to put secondary spaces (guest baths, laundry, guest bedrooms, patio, etc.).

Not all rooms are created equal when it comes to spending money. Our manufacturers offer a wide array of materials that will work in this design and decorating theme.  Attached is a link to Trend Fabrics blog highlighting items that add glamour to your home with just a small investment.

Be sure to disperse the use of metal throughout your project to create balance and repetition; two interior design principals.  You are only limited by your imagination and organizational skills.  Please sure to let us know if you have any specific questions on decorating your home.

For McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group paint color is just the start of any design project. We love working with color and you can too.  Your options are greatly enhanced when exploring color using professional decorating color “secrets”.  We use color theory to give our clients many color schemes when considering paint colors for their home.  So the simplest color can really be quite dramatic or more subdued depending on the other colors used in your color scheme.   N0 need to feel “locked in” into a specific “boring” color.  Depending on your style personality and design goals you have many choices when adding color to your home.

Below are color schemes using the same color:

Benjamin Moore Desert Tan

When you are considering paint colors for your home many issues impact your final decision process.  Purchase a small can of the color you are considering and paint several small areas.  (This is called a “brush out”.)  During the morning, afternoon and evening the color may appear warmer, cooler, darker, etc. depending on the time of day.  What you loved in the morning you may find is not so great in the late afternoon sun or evening when the light is low.

Surrounding colors may also have a positive or negative effect on your color choices.  Light can reflect from large walls or floors to cast color onto your walls and/or ceiling.  This can be very unpleasant if it appears to change your paint color or takes your room into another color direction than you originally planned.  Better to know this before you spend the time or money on labor to have the room painted.

In any event, color is fun so don’t be afraid to surround you and your family with the joys of color!

As always, McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group love to share all the latest trends in color. Prior to setting off to the Highpoint Furniture Market we read Pantone’s report on the latest colors we can expect to see for new home furnishings releases in Spring 2012.

Patone has just published their new colors for Spring 2012.  As the authority on color and color matching technology, we can expect to see their color trends show up in fashion, home furnishings, print, plastics and automobiles.   Read the latest from Pantone report for Spring 2012:

“The global authority on color recently unveiled the Pantone Fashion Color Report Spring 2012 to coincide with the start of New York Fashion Week.

The report features the top 10 colors for next year’s spring season, and the colors are as follows:

The top colors for women’s fashion for spring 2012 are as follows:

Pantone 17-1463 Tangerine Tango
Pantone 13-0759 Solar Power
Pantone 18-3628 Bellflower
Pantone 18-2140 Cabaret
Pantone 19-3953 Sodalite Blue
Pantone 14-0116 Margarita
Pantone 14-2808 Sweet Lilac
Pantone 14-5420 Cockatoo
Pantone 18-1210 Driftwood
Pantone 16-1120 Starfish

“Consumers look to spring for renewed energy, optimism and the promise of a brighter day,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “They have learned how color can help them alter a mood, while providing the vitality and enthusiasm that enables them to experiment with new looks and color combinations.”

Provocative Tangerine Tango, an enticing juicy orange, is a vivacious and appealing refresher to enliven anyone’s outlook this spring. Providing a jolt of energy, Solar Power radiates warmth and cheer.

Fanciful Bellflower, a distinct ornamental purple, exudes uniqueness and creativity. Scintillating and sexy, Cabaret is a sensual and intense rosy-red – an excellent choice for summer clothing and cosmetics.

Sodalite Blue, a classic maritime hue, brings order and calmness to mind. Like an anchor to a ship, this dependable shade works with every color in the palette. Cockatoo, a tactile blue-green, is sure to make spirits soar. This unusual hue adds a whimsical touch to the palette and will make a statement this spring.

Margarita, a piquant yellow-green, lifts spirits with its refreshing and stimulating glow. Reminiscent of a blossoming garden on an early spring morning, fragrant Sweet Lilac evokes the fresh scents of summer. This delicate pinkish lilac adds a touch of romance to any wardrobe.

Natural, versatile neutrals add practicality to this season’s brights. Driftwood, an adaptable blend of beige and gray with a slightly weathered feel, and Starfish, a perfect warm summer neutral, complement all of the colors in this season’s top 10.

The colors featured in the PANTONE Fashion Color Report are pulled from the most widely used and recognized color standards systems in the world, the PANTONE FASHION + HOME Color System, which now includes 175 new colors.”

“Proper Preparation and Planning is King”

At McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group we truly enjoy working with trade personnel.  In my view, it is critical to any design/built project to have a key general-contractor on site implementing my design plan and design intent on behalf of our clients. (Design intent is the oversight and installation of design elements that impact the final look of your project.  It does not include supervising contractors on the methods of construction for their particular trade.)

When you are interviewing  a designer, ask them if they have a reliable team of contractors and vendors to carry out  and complete your vision.  There are many members of the design team necessary to have a successful project outcome.  I am sometimes heard to say, “It only takes a village” and then I laugh because I work with the best contractors.

A few tips to consider when renovating your home:

Make your home bright, airy and open
  • Let in as much daylight as possible to make your home bright and airy.
  • Open up your home’s floor plan for a larger feel.
  • Remember:  the psychology of newness and spacious living areas will translate into the highest resale value.

Do not over improve your home

  • Remodel your home to the existing standards in your neighborhood.
  • Just because you put more money into your home than anyone else in the neighborhood, does not always mean that you will receive a higher sales price.

Collaboration builds strong team members and quality outcomes

 Always hire a licensed professional

  • When you hire a professional remodeler, you are buying a service rather than a product.  The quality of the service provided by a professional remodeler will result in a greatly improved quality of finish product preformed in a timely manner.
  • Check with state and/or local building licensing offices to confirm the contractor you are hiring has complied with all state and/or local contractor licensing requirements.
  • Also confirm the contractor has liability insurance and workman’s compensation for the workers that will be on your project unless exempt by state law.
  • Did you know that is someone is hurt on your job you may be responsible as the homeowner if your contractors do not have workman’s compensation or liability insurance.

Make sure our contractor always pulls a permit

  • Building permits are required by law and crucial for public health and safety.
  • If you skip building permits during the construction process it may impact selling your home at a later date.

While many people may have the impression interior design is expensive and time consuming, from my perspective as principal designer and owner of McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interior Design, it is really about focusing our lives to create simpler, and healthier lifestyles. Our lives are complex and busy with many demands made on our time.  Instead of becoming less time consuming the exact opposite is true.  As I explore making my own schedule less hectic, I wanted to share ideas with my readers to increase the quality your lives.

In that vein, I will be publishing affordable; easy ideas for home entertaining and decorating that may be used routinely.  While there are many sources for material, I have not found a source for easy access to streamline the solutions that are helpful to me.  I wanted to create a single source I could reference during my hectic day without doing a lot of research.

Recently, I updated our kitchen and realized the clutter that had accumulated over the past 5 years.  I found some simple and time saving organizational tools that increased my storage space and reduced my frustration.  As we go along, I will be publishing my own  tried and true methods for home organization.

I would love to hear your feedback and other ideas to add to the Easy Living articles.  Let’s make our lives simpler and more enjoyable together.

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group is constantly updating the color palettes we love and use in our client’s home décor.  Color is impacted by evolving national and global influences.  Appreciating color and its underlining psychological and physical impact in our environment is very important especially when designing homes.

Influences of Color

Color families have certain attributes ascribed to them.  Is there a specific color that instinctively speaks to you when you purchase items for your home or clothing?  Are you using color in an intuition manner that you may not be aware?

Blue

Relaxing and serene blue is calming, relaxing, tranquil and versatile. Blue is associated with patience, water, sky and introverts. Its effects include creating an environment that is cleansing, refreshing and promotes introspection. Blue also encourages deep breathing. Relaxes our muscles and minds. Medicinally blue helps insomnia; slows heartbeat, drops blood pressure and decreases appetite. In your interiors, avoid using blue with cream as the color cream may take on a gray cast.  The color blue can ran from pale to intense and dramatic.

Red

Red is denoted as dramatic, is energetic, exciting and daring. Red has the effect of facilitating judgment, enhances activity, encourages achievement, promotes alertness, and nurtures passion. Red is associated with vitality and strength. Its medicinal purposes include reducing fatigue, helps colds and depression; smoothes muscular aches and stimulates appetite. The most powerful color in the designer’s palette is red. Use red carefully as can easily overwhelm a space if not used with artistry.

Yellow

How do you feel about the color yellow? It is associated with cheerful, happy, joyful and uplifting spaces. It reminds us of sunshine, optimism, imagination, creativity and encourages spontaneity. It raises our spirits, helps govern the digestive system, attracts attention and is beneficial for mental activity. Yellow illuminates, is luminous, bright and reflective. Calm yellow with cream and accent colors to create a charming environment.

Green

As a color green creates calm; is restful, fresh and promotes the feeling of security. It reminds us of spring, nature, ecology, balance, money, envy, jealousy and simplified living. The effect of green is to promote balance; careful judgment; harmonizing and is smoothing to the soul. The color green enhances concentration and nurtures relaxation. It is also now considered a new neutral and is a mainstay color of design. For interiors, add yellow to warm the color palette and blue to cool green.

Purple

Is purple, violet or lavender one of your favorite colors? It is associated with royalty, spirituality, creativity, and artistic endeavors. The color balances mind and thoughts, nurtures sense of balance and purpose, calms the body, is thought provoking and inspiring. Soften purples with graying accents to create an elegant and sophisticated space. Combine colors of the purple family with yellow for a sense of harmony.

Orange

The color orange is lively, vibrant, warm, friendly, happy and social. It is associated with adventure, celebration, romance, enthusiasm, uniqueness and ethnicity. The effects of orange can be to energize a space, increases appetite, stimulating as it promotes movement and excitement. It raises our spirits. Use orange with wood tones and neutral earth colors to soften and balance your environment.

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group love color with all its’ ever evolving shades and tones.  Our lives are enriched and expanded by the use of color and made more enjoyable because of it.

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group receives requests from potential clients to help them update their home.  We are frequently asked:

We love the design you did for Mr. & Mrs. Smith (not real names).  Please help us create something similar for our home.

Careful Planning – Fabulous Results

Our short answer is it totally depends on what you have completed prior asking for our expertise.  We will need to analyze your home and determine your design goals (also called the scope of work).  We start with:

Goal #1:  Assessing the problem.

What if, anything, ties your room together?

What overall style are you trying to achieve?

Does your current furnishings fit the space; scale, style and dimensions necessary to reach your design goals?

How does the room function or how do you want it to function?

What do you want to keep?

What are you willing to give up?

Do you need light control (too dark or too light)?

Privacy issues?

What is the color palette you want to achieve?

Does this room work (flow) with the rest of your home?

Can we re-purpose items from one room and use them in another room?

Can we refinish or rework the items affordably so that it makes sense to spend the money?

How many design decisions and purchases have been made previously?

Are you willing to do what it takes to complete the design you are requesting?

Are you calling us in too late?

Is the budget realistic for the desired outcome?

Are you just spending good money after bad?

Are you willing to listen to our professional advice?

Outcome of Design Assessment and Analysis:

Honesty is King:  If you have a mishmash of items, styles, color, function and scale we may have no choice but  to start over.  Obviously, clients hate to hear their designer give bad news.  We hate giving bad news.  Many times just changing one or two items in the room and creating inspired design is just not possible. It is our responsibility to give our clients “bad news” prior to spending additional money on a design plan that will fall short of fabulous when completed.

A good design plan (and it is all about the details) is a must.  Going down the wrong road will eventually lead to the “wrong destination”.  In that case, we prefer not risking our well-won reputation or our client’s trust and money if we cannot impact your home in a drama and positive way.  It may seem harsh.  In the long run, it is more kind give an honest analysis rather than disappointing you or misspending your assets.

Does that mean we always have to start with a clean palette?  Not necessarily.  Many times our clients have home furnishings and treasures that can be used as the basis for a personal design that totally reflects their personalities which is our ultimate goal.

The answer to your question…  Can our design firm help you is a firm

“Maybe”

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group is often asked,  ”What is the definition ”Designer Ready” really mean?”  The term “designer ready” is basically a white box with good architectural “bones” ready for all the details to make it special.

Typically high rise condos only the kitchens and baths installed.   All other upgrades are added after the homeowner purchases their home including floors.  The term may also apply to homes during the remodeling stage when all the floors have been removed and extensive remodeling is underway.

High rise condominium buildings with post-tensioned construction must be properly addressed which require special expertise during the design and construction process to protect the integrity of the building.    Additionally, fire sprinkler head location must be taken into consideration as crown and other architectural details are added.

Nevertheless whether your home is located in a high rise or is a private single family residence each home is a blank slate waiting to reflect its’ owners personality. Our client’s lifestyle is an essential consideration as we deliberate during the design process making our selections for products and materials to be installed.

We work  with our list of fine certified contractors and architects during the construction phase implementing the design plan on behalf of our clients.

Over the years, McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group has designed many designer ready condos and private residences in South Florida.    It is exciting to take a “white box”; add all the elements of a fine home, and create a  intimate surrounding that reflections our client’s greatest desires.

Our ecstatic clients routinely tell us how beautiful and happy they are with their new homes.

It is our greatest reward.

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group was contacted by an journalist regarding the federal ban on incandescent light bulbs.  My first impression was why is the lowly light bulb under this kind of scrutiny?  Energy savings is important but have all the facts been considered?

Photo contributed to public domain by NASA

Psychologically our mood can also be impacted negatively or positively by the color of light. Additionally, surfaces are impacted by the color spectrum of lighting that is cast by light bulbs. (For example) the color of fabrics, paint, and finishes can be greatly altered by using a warm or cool tone light bulb in an interior space. Color is changed and affected by other color influences that surround it.

Art Wall Lighting on Dimmers

Historically, LED or fluorescent lighting which tends to go to the cool side of the color wheel and impacts the space in which it is used by cooling the colors and over feeling of the room.

Incandescent light bulbs and fixtures are available in a number of different color spectrums. A highly priced offering is the “neutral rendition” color spectrum. This is a lighting source that is without additional warm or cool tones. A neutral rendition light source is perfect any application that must maintain “color correctness” and the ability for the user to see an object in its “true light”.

Lighting and color is a powerful tool for interior designers and decorators. The concern is that by limiting our access to our “tools” also limits our ability to create the most desirable spaces for our clients.

Adjustability is also important when considering the output of light. There is an LED light which can be used with dimmers but is very expensive. Many consumers own 3-way lights that allow for additional lighting control. Adjusting the light output of incandescent lighting reduces the amount consumers spend on their overall energy costs.

Elements: Texture, Sheen, Color and Light

The disposal procedures of the new light bulb (when broken) are not environmentally friendly. Whereas the incandescent light bulbs are not a problem.

As a consumer I am concerned about the additional concern is the cost per bulb which is approximately 3 times more expensive than the incandescent light bulb.

The federally mandated phase-out of incandescent light bulbs seems short sighted. While I applaud the goal of reducing energy costs and introducing new lighting sources would it not be more beneficial to allow citizens to find the best solution to their needs and applications. Overtime additional product developments will be developed to improve our light sources and with improvement will come increased energy savings.

Just my thoughts…

As principal designer with McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group last night I tuned into a new “Design” program on cable television.  I do this occasionally and admire the work of a few of the design projects completed and highlighted on television.

The problem I have with many of these programs is the lack of professionalism and actual planning shown during the show.  More importantly, the information of project budgets is at best misleading and at worse disingenuous.

On last nights’ design show the client had a $40,000 budget which included installing a new kitchen, refinishing all the wood floors downstairs and replacing all the wood floors upstairs.  Not so bad; that may work with a $40,000 budget if the kitchen doesn’t eat up the whole budget.

Drawing Before

Not done yet… the staircase which was not structurally sound was rebuilt and upgraded, the whole house was painted, wallpaper was installed in several areas and a minimum of 11 windows were covered with new and (expensive) window shades (needed for privacy).

Ok, as I started to count up the costs, I was becoming skeptical.  Not done yet the “design” team provided all the furniture (new and refinished) for the project.  Highly unlikely on a $40,000 budget.

But wait… let’s talk design staff and contractors; the cost of design and contractor services are normally not included in any of these shows.  The designers had a minimum of 4 staff employees and numerous contractors to complete this project.  What was the cost of those services?  What products were donated at a reduced rate or given for free to acquire advertising?

Designers and contractors must make a profit to be in business.  Profit allows designers to spend endless hours of their time (much of it off the clock) to keep abreast of new trade technical and product upgrades to provide the highest and best design services available.

Built-in Installed

(If you as the home owner have tons of expertise and many hours of work available you may be able to pull off something similar on a very tight budget without design input or contractor support.)

Worse of all most of these shows do not account for the weeks of planning, installation, ordering materials and project management time that is necessary to complete a truly beautiful project.  I have friends of my clients who admire my work and want to know “How did the designer do this?  Everything works together so beautifully. “

My friend I tell you truthfully (and not in any specific order)…

-          Careful planning and cohesive design considerations

-          Many hours of thoughtful deliberation

-          Consultation with clients to consider their vision in the final outcome

-          Client input and approvals

-          Attention to detail

-          Dedication and passion

-          Ethical and professional business standards

-          Research, Research and more Research

-          Years of training, classes, reading, and actual design practice

And lastly and most importantly Talent.

I think everyone should have access to a beautiful home.  Just don’t be mislead by instant decorating utilizing very low budget figures.   The probability this scenario can be reproduced is highly unlikely for most homeowners.  In the final analysis a realistic budget will prevent a disappointing outcome and better interior design that will provide years of enjoyment to you and your family.

“Identify – Ernst” by Mike Weber – Mixed Media on Canvas and Panel, Resin Coated.

It is my pleasure to introduce my readers to a truly fine artist Mike Weber. In my quest to find artists to add depth and visual interest to the rooms I design for my client’s home, I’ve had the privilege of discovering an extraordinary artist, Michael Weber.

I was first drawn to Michael’s work, Identify – Ernst, Mixed Media on Canvas and Panel, Resin Coated.  The composite, movement and texture are fused so delightfully; I was immediately drawn to this artist’s spirit.

Excerpts from Michael Weber’s Artist Statement – WITHIN THESE WALLS:

“My childhood days were often spent exploring rural farmland outside St. Louis, Missouri.” Michael continues, “I remember the unique dry, yet musty scent of the house, a scent that took centuries to create. I remember the wind eerily whistling through the windows, blowing the remains of fragmented draperies through glassless windowpanes. I remember the stillness of the decaying materials, making visible the spirit of the past.

Here, I have given these memories new meaning: They have become symbols of our past and long forgotten bloodlines – that holds an umbilical connectivity that spans time.

Each piece in Within These Walls explores themes that connect a global audience with the use of historic images with a strong instinct. Using tremendously enriched materials and surfaces, I create a combination of things that look perfect and ruined at the same time, juxtaposed to create rhythm, harmony and coherence. My themes explore psychology, paranormals, spirituality, genealogy and the passage of time in order to create a connection between memory and a primitive association that has been sculpted into a modern context.”

I reached out to tell Michael how much I enjoyed his work.  Little did I know of his involvement with the National Endowment for the Arts “Spotlight Feature”.  Michael was so kind as to share his video:

One of McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group favorite resources is Modern Nature Designs which is a fine, hand knotted wool and silk area rug manufacturer that has 122 distinctive rug designs inspired by nature.  The quality is fabulous; the silk rugs are a delight.  Modern Nature Designs goal is to provide “refined taste and visual harmony” with the ability to custom color in custom sizes.

Color distribution is a key aspect of decorating and the hallmark of successful design. In that vein, I regularly customize area rugs given that it allows me to color coordinate my projects on every level; walls, floors, ceilings, draperies, and furnishings.

The most exciting aspect of Modern Nature Design on-line site is their style and color customizer tool which allows us to explore carpet background and foreground color choices and styles to coordinate directly with our fabric selections.

Additonally, difficulty visualizing how your new area rug will look when installed in your home is not a problem with a 12″ x 12″ “strike-off”.  (A strike-off is a corner sample of the rug you ordered.)  For a small fee a strike-off can be produced which allows you to touch, feel and approve the sample prior to start of production.  Of course, this is ideal because it eliminates costly purchasing errors.

Robert Allen Fabrics offer a wide range of fabrics in a variety of price points.  Visit Robert Allen Fabrics Design Studio who has partnered with Sherman-Williams color experts to create the Design Studio which features the newest in color and fabric trends.

Down View Floor Plan – Explanation of Design Terminology

A down view plan or space plan is a view of a floor plan which may or may not include furniture.  This drawing is the first drawing completed when starting a project.  Without an accurate floor plan a full proof project outcome is not possible.

Additionally CAD drawings (Computer Aided Design) allows the designer to work in levels which simply means the flooring details can be separated from the electrical outlet details from the furniture details.  The floor plan is used to show traffic patterns and the relationship of furniture and open spaces.  Floor plans are drawn to scale using blue prints with actual room dimensions verified by the designer responsible prior to proceeding with the project.

Elevations – Explanation of Design Terminology

An elevation is a view of an interior or exterior wall. You are standing back, looking directly at the wall. This is a flat, two-dimensional view. Only the height and width are obvious. This view of the wall shows items that cannot be clearly shown in plan. This could be wall moldings, cabinetry, built-ins, signs, graphics, window sizes, or a finish pattern that is applied on the wall.

Interior elevations will show the inside walls of a space.  Exterior elevations will show the outside walls of a building.

Elevations are drawn to scale. This means that the wall is measured down proportionately to a size that will fit on a sheet. Each elevation will be titled with the scale noted below the drawing.  The drawings are used to communicate the details to both the client and trades.

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interior Group uses Reflected Ceiling Plan (RCP)  when creating interior design projects for clients.  The following is an explanation of this design terminology:

A reflected ceiling plan is a drawing of a room or building, looking down at the interior ceiling.  It is a view of the ceiling from above. It is as if you were floating above the ceiling and looking down at it.

This view will show the location of light fixtures, drywall or t-bar ceiling patterns and any items that may be suspended from the ceiling.

A reflected ceiling plan is drawn to scale. This means that the plan is measured down proportionately to a size that will fit on a drawing sheet. A reflected ceiling plan will most often be at the same scale as the floor plan. A common scale is one quarter of an inch is equal to one foot (scale: ¼” = 1’-0”). The reflected ceiling plan will be titled with the scale noted below.

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group uses design details and cross sections when drawing for client’s projects.  Below is an explanation of a CAD design cross section drawing and how it is used during a design project.

Detail drawings provide information about specific parts of the construction.  A detail is both graphic and written information. An area of construction is drawn at a larger scale in order to clearly show the materials, dimensions, method of building, desired joint or attachment, and so on.

Details are most commonly drawn as sections which are a cross sectioned slice through a specific area and the inner components are visible.  The purpose of cross section details is to convey design intent by the designer to the contractor/vendor.  It is the responsibility of the contractor to convert the plans and complete the build-out as drawn.

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group may analyze a home during a preliminary visit and make the comment “This home needs to be edited”.  What does that really mean?

Firstly, editing is creating a cohesive group of objects, colors, functions or visual shapes which create harmony.  Have you wondered why your home or office feels uncomfortable; does not feel relaxing to spend time in or seems a little funky and not in a good way?

This may simply be lack of design focus.  Maybe we acquired some furniture from Mom which worked for our purposes at the time or inherited family treasures which we love but really don’t reflect who we are, or the rest of the room.  Maybe we have really casual rustic items with highly modern pieces and can’t figure how to make the changes to have our room look the way we envision.

For most people, keeping a single focus will result in the best design outcome.  Yes, designers do mix a multitude of colors, furniture, art and accessories and it can work out wonderfully.  It is tricky to achieve and takes a light hand to accomplish the best effect.

If you prefer traditional or transitional design but are finding it a little boring and feel like you are missing out on all the new wonderful more contemporary furnishings being highlighted in the design magazines, I offer these suggestions:

Remove a few of the older more serious pieces from your room and bring in furnishings in the classic sense but with a few more straight lines and updated styling.  Replace the accessories including pillows and lamps using similar colors and finishes to refresh the space.

Stay focused and carefully determine which lines and details are common to all the new elements you are adding.  Each new item should reflect similar design details of the other furnishings in the room.

Pick three colors, any three colors and reproduce them throughout your room.  Make sure you have something or several some things that have the same three colors.  For example:  A pillow fabric in a print would have two of your three colors… so add fringe or trim in the third color and now all three colors are included from your design plan.

Add accessories that function as well as look great.  Boxes are wonderful to hide the audio visual remote controls.

Take before and after pictures, send them to me and I will highlight a few of them in my blog.  I am happy to analyze your space and make other suggestions that may be helpful to complete your rooms.

Creating harmony through editing is something that is simple and effective that just about anyone can accomplish.  Most of all have fun!

When McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group has a preliminary meeting with a new client many times we are asked “How Does the Design Process Start?”

New Client Question: My wife and I just purchased our dream vacation and future retirement home. Now it is time to decorate and she would like some professional input. We have amassed too much “stuff” over the years and really don’t know what to move to our new home (if anything). What tips could you give us to start the process?

Answer: First, congratulations on your new home. I work with many new retirees and multi-home owners in South Florida.

The most important tip I can give to anyone considering updating their home: put together a comprehensive design plan. Developing a design plan may take a little longer, but in the long run the extra planning is a more direct process and will prevent purchasing mistakes.

This is a perfect time to explore the new exciting decorating  options available. This gives us the option to go in a completely different direction or inventory your treasures to determine how they can be added to the design of your new home.

I start the design planning process by talking to my clients about what I call “the scope of work”. You may be downsizing or considering guest quarters for your family when they come to visit. I want to know as much about your desires for your new home as possible. I find listening is the most important part of the design process when starting a new project and throughout each phase of the design.

Go through decorating and interior design magazines to pull pictures you like. This takes a little time… it is fun… and you will be surprised how quickly your eye will be drawn to the same shapes, colors and style over and over. This will give you and your wife a good starting point for conversation of how you would like your new home to look and feel.

If you have seen a project McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group has completed, we will discuss the specific elements and style that will work in your home.

Consider how Florida and Palm Beach County specifically is different from where you are currently living. It is not just the sunshine but how light reflects within our homes due to the difference in the climate. Light effects color. There is a reason different regions of the United States use particular colors and designs based on air temperature, brightness, humidity and lifestyle.

And my final and most important tip: ENJOY! Design should be fun and allows us to explore new parts of our personality as we grow and change.

Designer Ready Installed Kitchen Without Flooring

Beautiful Views, Ready for Floors & Decoration

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group is often called upon to do “Designer Ready” high rise homes.  What is a “Designer Ready” condominium or explanation of design terminology?  The term “designer ready” is basically a white box with good architectural “bones” ready for all the details to make it special.

These new homes have only the kitchens and baths installed.  Some units include the flooring in the bath rooms and others do not.  All other upgrades are added after the homeowner purchases their condominium.

Flooring in post-tensioned buildings must be addressed properly and ceilings take special expertise due to the nature of the buildings in which the designer ready unit occupies.  Sounding proofing is dictated by the buildings architectural code to protect all homeowners and insure their quiet enjoyment on the floors directly above and below the unit purchased.

Many design possibilities and upgrades must be considered by the new homeowner.    Creating a dream vision and implementation of the remaining design elements can seem daunting.  Homeowners must deliberate on the selection of flooring, base and crown moldings, paint and a seemingly endless list of interior modifications required to make a white box a home.

Lifestyle is an essential consideration that must be addressed when completing a successful interior design project. Client involvement is developed and expanded throughout the design process.  Cultivation and inclusion of design aspirations and lifestyle is necessary to create a comfortable and enjoyable home in which to live.  The joy of designer ready allows the homeowner to control their budget and final design outcome.

Completed “Designer Ready” Model

Over the years, we have designed many designer ready condos in South Florida.  This aspect of design is probably one of our favorite due to our level of involvement with our client and the team-work from our  resource list of professional contractors and artisan trades people. It is so rewarding to take a “white box”; add all the elements of a fine home, creating the reflection of my client’s lifestyle and greatest desires.  We love the flurry and activities as we complete each phase of the process and beauty that comes from careful planning and application of interior design principals.

Palm Beach is home to many historical homes built in during the 1920’s.  Occasionally, I have a few hours available from my action packed schedule.  Recently my husband and I took the opportunity to visit some an open house in Palm Beach, Florida.

We visited a home built in 1926 just one block off of Worth Avenue which is Palm Beaches’ famous shopping mecca.  The home is exceptionally charming with the original woodwork and pecky cypress ceilings.  This was the original home of Marjorie Merriweather Post in Palm Beach, Florida.  She lived in the home and added the guest house while Mar-A-Lago was under construction.  The house is nearly authentic to the period which adds to its’ charm.  The home is situated next to the golf course and overlooks the lake and grounds.

I loved the original details and the turret with a view of downtown Palm Beach. The third floor staircase accesses a narrow and slightly scary staircase to anyone in high heels (me!) traversing to the fourth floor which housed an office, bath and one additional small twisting stairway to the two outside terraces on the fifth floor.   It was definitely worth the effort to see the view of the Breakers Hotel and downtown Palm Beach.

Hogarcito was featured as one of the homes on the March 2009 Palm Beach walking tour which featured 7 homes.  The architect was Marion Sims Wyeth; builder Harry R. Corwin; construction stated in 1921.  The style is considered Mediterranean Revival and was land-marked on May 13th, 1997.   Palm Beach offers walking tours on a regular basis.  If you happen to be in town, check out the architecture walking tours available.

Enjoy,

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group is located in the heart of Palm Beach, FL.   As such we are surrounded by wonderful historic homes dating from the 1920′s and forward.

Décor for large estate homes in South Florida tends to be classic transitional to traditional with hints toward decorative influences of the homeowners world travels.

In 1918 Addison Mizner arrived in Palm Beach, Florida and set off to employ romantic the Spanish Revival architectural style with design inspirations from Alhambra courtyards to Colonial mission churches adapted to the South Florida climate.  A grand success, Mizner’s style became the style of Palm Beach society.  New architects joined him and they found that clients expected Mediterranean-style villas.

Outdoor “Florida Rooms” offer alternate living spaces which is extremely important in South Florida on the ocean in Palm Beach or overlooking the polo fields of Wellington, FL. during the winter “season”.

Indoor and Outdoor Estate Living

Ornamental ironwork and cast stone window frames, doorways arches and columns give the Mediterranean Revival style its importance.  Outdoor furniture, fabrics, area rugs, and lighting add to the feel and durability of any outdoor space.

In addition to the classic Mediterranean Revival style, Art Deco and classic Florida Bungalows dot our neighbors.  The flavor of Florida architecture is extensive and offers style for every homeowner’s taste; at a variety of  price points.

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group takes the care of fine upholstery seriously.  We have put together a quick care guide for our clients to use for their new furniture and carpeting.  Please feel free to use this as a guide although the care and cleaning tags on each fabric should be referred to for specific fabric blends and optimal care.

How to Vacuum Furniture

For upholstered furniture use the upholstery tool from your vacuum cleaner attachments. The crevice tool will also help vacuum corners and edges. The dust brush tool works well when vacuuming leather upholstered furniture. For really delicate fabrics, use caution. For bookshelves and other non-upholstered furniture, use the dust brush tool or crevice tool.

How Often to Vacuum Furniture

Even though it hides it well, furniture picks up a lot of the dirt and dust that gets tracked into our homes. For best results, furniture should be vacuumed weekly.

Fabric Cleaning Codes

  • The “W” code refers to fabrics that are man-made. Examples of this category would include nylon, herculon, acetate, olefin and polyester.

Cleaning recommended for these types of fabrics would be to spot clean using the foam from a water- based cleaning agent. This could be a mild soap or detergent or a non-solvent upholstery cleaner. You should always use a clean, dry white cloth or sponge and, as I mentioned before, test an area that is less noticeable first. Blot the area dry and use the cool setting on a dryer to dry once the stain is removed. A fan also may be used. Procedures may vary for upholstery versus window treatments. For example, when spot cleaning a chair cushion, clean the entire surface of the cushion. Follow the directions carefully. If the fabrics have a soil protection treatment or flame retardancy, the procedure may change.

  • Fabrics with the code “S” would include those from an organic nature such as cellulosic fibers (from plants) like cotton, rayon and linen as well as materials manufactured from protein fibers (animal origin) like wool or silk. Additional code “S” fabrics would be denim, velour, brocade, tapestry, damask, acrylic and plaid (cotton/olefin blend).

The cleaning procedure for these types of fabrics also would be spot cleaning using a mild, water-free solvent or dry cleaning product. Again, pre-test the product in a less visible area before use and, as before, be sure to not over- saturate, allow the area to dry completely and use a clean, white cloth. Blot out the solution. If the stain persists, rub lightly in a circular motion using a clean part of the cloth. Reverse the circular motion using a clean part of the cloth each time. You also may use the cool setting of a dryer or fan the area dry once the stain is removed. For cleaning a cushion, again, you would clean the entire surface.

  • Fabrics with the “W/S” code may be spot cleaned with a mild solvent, shampoo for upholstery or the foam from a mild soap or detergent solution. Techniques mentioned for “W” or “S” coded fabrics should be followed.

  • Fabrics with the code “X” should only be cleaned by vacuuming or light brushing. Water- or solvent-based cleaning agents should not be used.

Manufacturers and suppliers are always willing to assist you in defining these codes for their particular products. If you are ever unsure, do not hesitate to contact your sales representative. It is better to be safe when assisting a client with fabric care.

Remember also that aftermarket fabric protectors may change the procedure and results for each category of fabric. For more information on this topic, you also can contact the fabric manufacturer or supplier or the manufacturer of the soil prevention treatment.

The guidelines mentioned here should be verified with each manufacturer as each type of fabric varies in response to cleaning.

Proper care of your new furniture and fabrics will give you years of enjoyment.  Please contact us at McGaw & Company, Inc. - Residential Interiors Group  if you have additional questions.

Enjoy!

 CAD Drawing

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group

Model Home Space Plan

Computer Aided Design also know as CAD is very cost effective in determining the scale, color and specific features of the design changes you may be considering making to your home or business prior to purchasing materials.  Budgetary, material and square foot costs can be calculated  for a project of any scale or scope.

McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group personalizes your CAD drawing by applying your selected wood finishes, granite, flooring, fabrics and paint colors to the drawing.  This is an excellent method (and fun I might add) to determine how the room will look when completed.

We routinely provide elevations of your new or refurbished room including measures and design options.   This will give you a 2-D visual for  items such as draperies, art,  furniture style vs. cabinet details, architectural trim moldings, etc.   Drawings will give you a perspective of how the relative heights, functionality and scale will impact your finished room.

CAD is an excellent tool to visualize your finished and confirm the direction of your inspirations.

At McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group we find all good interior decoration starts with a design direction, fabric selections and color inspiration.  We love to pair Sherman Williams paints with a collection of wonderful new designer fabrics such as these from Robert Allen Fabrics.  This collection would work great with Sherman Williams colors:  Chamoise SW6131, Black Bean SW6006, Quiver Tan SW6151 or Nacre SW6154.

Paint is the simplest way to add color to a room.  If you tire of it overtime, or make a mistake in your color selection, a little labor is all that is needed to make your necessary change.

Design Tip: Do brush-outs of all the paint selections you may be considering because the color sample may not reflect the true color.  The  light and other colors in your room will impact your final color choices.  I paint a sample and hold it up to the wall at different times of the day to see how the color will be affected by sunlight and shadows.    Be sure to balance your color through the room to create harmony.

Most importantly, just enjoy color.  It is one of the most important elements in the design process.

The fabrics shown are available for use in your home.  Please leave a comment below if you would like more information.

Art Wall Lighting on Dimmers

Long walls without a focal point can be particularly difficult to decorate around unless you add visual interest by breaking  the wall up using light and art.  Originally this was a long wall without visual interest directly across from one of the main seating areas in this home.

During the remodel, McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group removed the two original outdated sconces and replaced them with three recessed receptacles behind the art.

The art lights were rewired to accommodate a straight plug to use with the recessed art light receptacles.     The recessed receptacles were wired to a dimmer switch to control the flow of light and were considered as a part of the overall lighting plan.

Art lighting is also available on batteries or hard wired to your electrical source.  Picture light cord covers are also available in a variety of finishes when re-wiring is not an option.

The art work was framed in the same style as used in the seating area opposite from the art wall.  The art was from the same artists to create a drama and cohesive flow of color and style.

Art lighting creates a layer of atmosphere to any space.  Lighting manufacturers are offering picture and art lights with remote control features.  This is a perfect addition to create drama within a space with the ease of using a remote control.  This fixture has the added benefit of plugging into existing receptacle outlets.  Battery powered art lights can be added in areas of your home without tying into electrical outlets or when an exposed cord would be unsightly.

Scaling lighting can be critically important to get the most impact from your art and lighting plan.  Most professionals advise to purchase picture lighting that is one-half the dimension of your art.  This is a good starting point.  You may want to adjust the lighting fixture width dimension depending on the outside frame dimension, mat selection and scale of the art relative to its overall size.

Custom Drapery Styles created by McGaw & Company, Inc. – Residential Interiors Group

addressed the client’s eight foot ceilings and wide expansion of sliding doors. We designed three different styles of drapery using computer aided design (CAD) in a multi-layering application to make the most of the low ceilings and to tie the Living Room and Dining Room together with a harmonious design.

Elevations of drapery styles and fabric choices helps focus the design process

Draperies define the view; the design direction of the room; scale and function of each option

Installed Drapery

This homes’ eight foot ceiling height appears much taller due to the drapery design.    Installing the drapery side panels over the cornice board adds height to the low ceiling. The use of low profile furniture further accentuates the difference in height between the ceiling and the top of the upholstered pieces making the room feel taller and more modern.

Scaled working drawings provide information to my drapery workrooms as well help my client visualize the draperies prior  to manufacturing and installation.
